Sustainability Commitment.

At John Halpin Upholstery & Soft Furnishings in Sydney, Australia, we are committed to responsible practices that reduce our environmental impact while delivering exceptional quality and craftsmanship.

We believe the most sustainable approach in our industry is extending the life of furniture and soft furnishings through expert re-upholstery and restoration. By repairing and renewing rather than replacing, we help reduce the demand for new production and keep items out of landfill.

Our key commitments include:

Australian Craftsmanship & Skills: We actively invest in training and nurturing traditional upholstery skills to secure the future of the craft for the next generation.

Responsible Material Selection: We prioritise high-quality, lower-impact materials wherever feasible, including: Environmentally-friendly fabrics such as cotton, linen, bamboo, hemp, wool, silk, reclaimed leather, recycled plastic, and recycled polyester.

Eco-Friendly Upholstery Fillings: We offer natural and recycled options including:

  • Wool – naturally springy and comfortable.

  • Down & Feathers – bouncy, breathable and comfortable.

  • Coir – strong, elastic fibers from coconut husks for durability.

  • Cotton – soft and breathable.

  • Natural Latex – derived from rubber trees for excellent comfort and support.

  • Re-Constituted Foam – made from foam offcuts, helping divert waste from landfill.

Curtains & Blinds: We provide beautiful soft furnishings that also deliver environmental benefits through:

  • Energy efficiency – providing insulation to reduce heating and cooling needs.

  • Sustainable materials – using organic cotton or recycled fabrics where possible.

  • Longevity – high-quality items designed to last and minimise replacements.

  • Natural cooling – blocking sunlight to reduce reliance on air conditioning.

  • Improved indoor air quality – using natural, low-VOC materials that limit harmful emissions.

Waste Minimisation: We strive to reduce fabric and material waste through careful pattern cutting and seek responsible reuse or recycling for offcuts and remnants.

Scope of Our Sustainability Approach

We address the following areas in our operations and policy:

  • Waste to landfill: Actively minimised through optimised cutting and use of re-constituted foam from offcuts.

  • Labour practices: All staff are directly employed under Australian laws with fair wages and safe working conditions. We promote fair and inclusive employment practices.

  • Community benefit: We contribute to our local community by supporting traditional trade skills and providing stable employment opportunities in Sydney.

  • Energy use, water use, transport, and biodiversity impacts:  We manage them responsibly through efficient workshop practices, preference for local suppliers (reducing transport distances), and responsible sourcing of natural and recycled materials.

We are dedicated to continuous improvement and regularly review our material choices, workshop practices, and supplier relationships as better sustainable options emerge.

Quality, longevity, and care for the planet go hand in hand. This is the sustainable legacy we are building for our clients.
